In 1952, Jack O’Neill opened the world’s first surf shop in a humble garage in Santa Cruz, California. With a passion for surfing and innovation, he created the wetsuit, making it possible to surf longer, harder, and in colder waters. Jack didn’t just change the sport—he helped shape a culture.

Jack O’Neill believed that cold water should never limit the joy of surfing. In the 1950s, he pioneered the development of the modern surfing wetsuit, experimenting with materials and designs that helped surfers stay warmer and ride longer.
What began as a simple idea became a defining innovation in surf history, opening up colder waters and changing the way people experience the ocean.
